Hon John Luxton is a NZ dairy farmer who was a former Member of the NZ Parliament for 15 years and a NZ Cabinet minister from 1990 to 1999. He was Minster of a dozen different portfolios including Agriculture, Fisheries, Commerce, Maori Development, Police, Customs, Housing and Energy, etc and also a number of Associate Ministerial roles.
Currently he is the Chair of DairyNZ, the dairy farmer funded industry good research, extension and advocacy organisation focussed upon ensuring that New Zealand dairy farming remains internationally competitive and sustainable. He has extensive New Zealand dairy farming interests. He was also a foundation director and shareholder of NZ’s second largest dairy processor, Open Country Dairies.
He is a director and former chairman of Tatua, a specialist protein and foodservice milk processor and exporter about to celebrate its centenary; Wallace Corporation, a specialist renderer, tannery and exporter; Landcare, the New Zealand Environmental Research Institute and he was formerly a director of the Royal NZ Ballet Company. He is also Co-Chair of the Waikato River Authority, a joint Government /Maori Board responsible for New Zealand’s largest river catchment.
He Chairs the Waikato Mayoral Forum Economic Strategy Group and is a member of the Government appointed Constitutional Advisory Panel and the Massey Foundation.
He spent a number of years on farm and also in international agricultural consulting in Africa, the Pacific and Asia. He has been a top NZ farming award winner and earlier this year was awarded Massey Universities most distinguished Alumni Service Award.
